When a veteran comes home: what families should know
Why family preparation matters
Returning from military service can change a family's familiar routines. Sleep difficulties, the need for personal space and different expectations are not always easy to explain to each other.
Talking without pressure
Trust and predictability may matter more than insisting someone immediately share what they have experienced. Family members do not have to become therapists: agreeing on everyday routines, boundaries and ways to communicate can be useful.
Where to learn more
Valhalla on Earth develops educational resources for veterans and families. Our paper The Family Left Unbriefed examines the need for family preparation; it is a theoretical review, not proof that any particular programme works.
